Our educational project started as a collaboration between the Anatomy Department of Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest and the biggest emergency hospitals in Romania – Emergency Hospital Floreasca and the University Emergency Hospital – under the umbrella of the Romanian Association for Endoscopic Surgery (RAES). It came as a direct need for acute care surgery workshops as well as trauma surgery workshops with hands-on component.
Looking across Europe we realized that the combination between theoretical sessions and hands-on with intubated pigs as well as fresh cadaver is very rare on the continent. So, even from the start, our organizing team had as a target the conception of state of the art workshops with East – European prices so that our young colleagues could attend to. The workshop provides an ideal mix of the traditional standard of care principles with cutting edge, forward-moving practices. It explores issues related to resuscitation and surgical technique. The workshop runs theory in the morning sessions and hands-on sessions in the afternoon.
From the faculty perspective, even from the start, we had the pleasure of working with some of the best experts across Europe, with large expertise in emergency surgery and recognized pedagogic skills. Selman Uranues (Austria), Abe Fingerhut (France), Marek Soltes (Slovakia) and Hayato Kurihara is just a few names involved in our project. Above them, Romanian experts were gladly invited to join our enthusiastic project.
From the technological perspective our aim is to introduce our participants to the latest surgical equipments in order to be in close contact to the most modern materials and instruments.
After having our ideas as clear as possible we have decided to split strategically in two directions: Acute Care Surgery Workshop – focused on laparoscopy in emergency setting and Trauma Surgery Workshop – focused, normally, on open surgery. In both workshops have the participants the opportunity of practicing on intubated pigs as well as on fresh cadavers.
Also we organized a lot of others educational events with live surgery and how to write a paper.
